I replied directly that I'd probably go with small-tube 110V
incandescent, because it still seems to be the best tradeoff;
all the low-voltage systems I've seen run hot, use inefficient
transformers and have very expensive replacement costs. The small
tube fluorescents don't have a lot of color temp choice, which
nixes them for me.
The LED suggestion is pretty interesting. They also tend to have
a very cold color temp, though http://www.ledtronics.com/ds/stp527/
claims a sunlight color temp! Good find, if pricey. Not clear
that they provide enough lumens for *work*, though.
Luxeon are the folks that are making seriously high output LEDs
(as in, they need a heat sink!). They're not doing a lot of
commercial end products, but you might contact
