Fiberglass gratings are used as catwalks and as floor grids to keep feet off 
of wet floors in chemical plants, etc.  Those gratings look as you describe, 
and are wonderful for stabilizing grass areas for traffic.  They truly 
disappear in the grass, but increase the load-bearing capability of the 
ground very well.

Buying them new, they're incredibly expensive, but if you can get them used, 
it's a wonderful solution.  Wish I could find some for the grass in front of 
my hangar.
