I too have thought about getting a security system for similar reasons
- I'd mainly like fire/flood detection. Motion detection would be
pretty useless with our cats as well, so it would just be glass
break/door force monitoring.

Angie's List for DC has a ton of ratings for FrontPoint Security - 86%
are A, 9% B, 3% C and 1% D - 0% F. That ranking would make me talk to
them.

Then again, if you have issues with GE security gear (curious as to
why), they may not be the right choice, as that's one of the items
they advertise.
