I thought motion sensors were mostly Passive InfraRed - so don't get set 
off by trees. And the sensitivity can normally be set so that cats don't 
trigger them. Man sized animals might be a different issue (but then it 
might be good to be able to see if there is something like a bear 
hanging around...)
