Jack,

   That's the hard way to learn.  I hope it didn't hit you on the way to
the back wall.

   If you are using an external spring compressor, there should be 2, one
on each side of the spring.  In addition, there should be some hooks that
are with the spring compressor.  These should be placed on the side of the
compressor to keep it from slipping.
