Everyone,
    Some additional information.  When I retorqued the head I also adjusted
the valves to the proper .010 clearance plus there is gas in the tank and
fuel is getting to the carb.  The engine turns over but still isn't
starting.   I haven't had a chance to check the starter motor or to see if
the gravel sound is gone.  I hope this clarifies my earlier question.
