Well my wifes 70 spit now ahs nice firm brakes! I had read and re-read the
procedure in the manual for bleeding the brakes before it finally sunk in.
The "fail-over design" of the dual chamber system actually causes the
problem. There was air in the rear lines, when the brake pedal was fully
depressed, the piston would slide over which resulted in the fluid going the
path of least resistance - the front calipers (high volume/low pressure
operation) and nothing would go to the rears (low volume high pressure).
The solution was to only press the pedal half way when bleeding, this kept
the piston from sliding over. With the help of my 10 year old we had the
brakes bled in 20 minutes and a nice firm pedal.

A very screwy brake design!
