Hi Rachel,
Other possibilities are the breather pipe from the fuel tank.
Fumes from anywhere in the tank area can settle in the car when you are not
moving, and as they are heavier than air they are hard to shift.
So I would look very carefully.
Is it particulalry worse just after you have filled up?
If the filler neck rubber pipe is a bit old an perished it can let petrol in
when you fill her up...
Otherwise a classic place for leaks is the tube between the float bowl and jet
on the carburettors.
This would not effect performance.
Just put your hand under the carbs when the engine is running and see if you get
a hand full of gas. (Be careful though, as its close the exhaust manifold and
hence a good place to get burnt!
