Not an unusual problem. Mine, if I try lifting from the drivers side it is
fine (although a little heavy), but from the passengers side it jams against
the opposite catch like you describe.

First off, you should not be lifting using the catches (just in case you
are), as it over-stresses the surrounding metal which will eventually tear.
You ideally want an equal lift on both sides, the level of twisting you are
getting is quite common, although not something you want to repeat more than
you have to.

I generally lift a little on the drivers side (since mine doesn't jam from
that side), until I can get a hand under the middle of the rear edge of the
bonnet. Lift as far as I can, then finish off just pushing on bottom edge
nearest me - it's nearly vertical by then, so pushing on one side only
doesn't impart that much of a twist.

It may be worth adjusting the catches to see if it helps with the jamming
problem. There are two adjustments - the rubber cone on the bonnet, which
should be adjusted using the locknuts so that the bonnet sits at the same
height as the strip of metal in front of the windscreen; and the r-shaped
bracket on the side of the body-tub that the catch catches onto, which can
be adjusted up and down to set the stiffness of the catch.

Not being able to open your own bonnet on your own is not a great idea!
