although a bit tedious perhaps... a standard front strut
style compressor will work. You basically use two small u-bolts
around the spring metal, with attach to the apparatus of the
compressor. At leas the spring can not 'escape' you or the
compressor. This setup works well 'on' the car to adjust those
lower adjustable spring perches on AVO, Spax, Carrera etc
shocks.

I've since built a 'home brew' compressor. I once had a set
of shocks where the lower spring plate was not a permanent
part of the shock body. Two small crescent shaped shims fit
into 'dents' in the shock body and the spring plate locked them in.
(very similar to your valve spring retainers) So my home design
had to allow me to either use the spring plate, or a bolt through the lower
mount hole to attach the shock to my compressor (when off the car)

I made mine out of 1.25" angle iron, with each 'plate' basically
a square with as the center being just large enough to fit the shock
through.
By flipping over the lower plate, and extending my threaded rods.
I can run a bolt through the shock's lower mount hole, and bolt it
to the compressors lower plate.

I'll guess I should snap a few pics, and add them to the page (link above)
