I took the advice from Moss Motors a while ago and order a handful of brass
bullet connectors and new 4 way connector blocks. Their web site suggested
that the solder that was inside of the brass bullet connector can crack and
give intermittent connection and flakey performance. I cut about 1 inch off
of each wire and soldered the new brass bullet connectors to the fresh wire.
6 years now and no real electrical gremlins have appeared.

It would be very strange for a wire to just break, without any external
physical damage.
More likely it is the bullet connectors on the ends.
Also, have you replaced all those 4-way connector blocks? The springy
contact inside them can crack and no longer make good contact.
Go order a dozen.
