Actually I have done some reading and have owned a 1500.  I also at the
time had friends with 1500s (in Triumphs). 

Perhaps I should have said 'is a known failure mode of the 1500' rather 
than use the word 'common'.  

It is a well known fact that the 1500 has a weak bottom end which can be
overcome by the fitment of an oil cooler - preferably early in the life
of the engine.

I did not intend to give the engine any bad press, but I believe my 
statement was true - with the exception of the word 'common' which I 
admit is misleading.

And, yes, the A series also grew from a small engine - but major changes
to the bottom end went hand in hand with the increases in capacity, and
BL stopped at 1275 on that one.
