So, being curious, surfed on over to the Halvoline pages, in honour of
Micheal Andretti's recent victory, and took a look at the product
specifications for gear oil and motor oil.  found some interesting stuff.

First, the viscosity grade for motor oil is an SAE specification, while the
VI for gear oil is not.  Comments in the spec pages indicate that different
temperature measurements are performed, and the different oils are designed
to perform differently at various temps.

The Viscosity Index of SAE 30 motor oil and 80W-90 gear oil is about the
same at 102 - 103.  But the other numbers are quite different.  I have no
idea what this means, but it's interesting...URL below
