I had a very similar problem, and it turned out to be a leaky fuel hose; the
hose just seeped a bit past the clamp, just enough to make the end of the
hose damp with gas. I fixed it by replacing the hose. Look for a fuel leak
somewhere, maybe on the pump, anywhere on the lines, or maybe a carburetor
float bowl.
