Hi,

As an infrequent poster, but frequent reader of the list...I now find myself
faced with a mini-mystery involving the rear brakes on our 69 Sprite.

Specifically...the correct placement of the shoe return springs. "Haynes"
shows them placed behind the shoe-webs (towards the backing plate) and is
very specific about " making sure they are on the correct  side of the
shoe-web, but the only way I can manage to get everything to fit, and clear
the parking brake lever, is with the springs to the outside of the web
(towards the drum). This, however has a tendency to twist the shoes away
from the backing plate. I realize that once the drum is installed it should
counter this twisting and retain the shoes parallel to the backing plate.

I'm pretty certain that I have the proper springs in the proper places, as I
ordered new ones and matched part numbers to their correct positions. Oh
yeah...upon disassembly the springs were to the outside (as I currently have
them), but this isn't real reassuring as most past owner repairs seem to
have been done by Attila the Hun or someone else as equally heavy-handed.

Anyway Spridgeteer brake mechanics...any consensus or similar experiences
out there...inside or outside? I just hate a mystery unsolved, so any input
from you guys and gals would be appreciated.
