Alan,
I bought the overdrive unit, a Laycock J type, togetrher with a gearbox at a
knockdown price of 60 pounds (say $100). After I got it home it turned out
to be a fully reconditioned unit !
Spitfires used the same gearbox as the 1500 midgets, but with the option of
overdrive which was never an available option with the midget. I think that
the unit from either the 1300 or the 1500 Spit will fit, but some changes
may be needed on the input shaft. I had to swap over the input shaft from my
standard gearbox.
Some modifications to the shell of the Midget are needed, but nothing that
causes any real difficulty.
If you wish I can E-mail a detailed description of the work, but I don't
want to bomb the list with a lengthy text, unless others want the info, so
let me know.
Guy,
UK
