The half shafts for steel wheels are longer than those for wire wheels (or
is it the other way around?). As for compatibility, there may be a concern
that fitting a shorter shaft to a longer axle housing would result in less
of the shaft spline being engaged in the differential, thus transmitting
more stress to the splines. However, at least one lister has had this set
up for some time with no problems.
