These O-Rings were/are the usual stem seals on the 948/1098 engines with
the original guides.  They aren't as effective as the wonderful new viton
ones that fit over a groove on the newer guides, but they do work pretty
well.  They keep the oil from running down the stem and past the guides. 
They are placed between the valve spring cap and the bottom of the
keepers.  They should be used even if you have the new style stem seals.
