Tommy:

You don't say what jurisdiction you are in, but most vehicle registration
authorities will be able to do a search on the car's VIN number. A problem
could arise in your situation where the car has not been registered for many
years - old records get purged, computer systems are changed and they don't
transfer all the files, etc. etc.

My 63 had been unregistered for 15 years or so (judging by the year on the
old front licence plate), the VIN search came up empty (files purged), so I
had to pay for a manual search in some dusty archive, which also came to
nothing. In the end, I got it registered, but it took a while........

Every jurisdiction will have a process to deal with your situation.

Good luck with the bureaucrats!
