It could also be the crankshaft pulley if it's the split riveted one.  It
may be in the process of splitting.  Noise would also disappear with the
belt off.

My guess (without hearing it) would be....

1) generator bearing
2) bum waterpump
3) Timing chain slap
4) valve tap
5) rod knock
To eliminate the generator and water pump, remove the fan belt and start
it up.
No more noise would make it one of those components.
