Since they weren't even making cars 40 years ago, the question is moot.

The 20 year old question holds equally well for American cars, and british.  
When
you look at the ratios of cars built to the number on the road still, the "jap
crap" holds its own quite well.

Vega, Pinto, Citation, Gremlin, etc.
