There certainly are differences in appearance of these two types of flares and
also the way they seat in the fitting and how the fitting looks. The nuts are
about the same in appearance for each of these.

The double flare looks essentially the same as a single flare, that. when you
look at it, there is a depression in it. The double flare is significantly
stronger and far less prone to splitting when tightened. It's made by folding
the end of the tubing into itself with a special tool. It also seats onto a
cone
down inside of the fitting.

The bubble flare has a bit of a dome shape to the end. Almost as though they
stopped making a double flare half way through the process. It seats into a
funnel shape inside the fitting. They tend to seat better with less torque on
the nut than the older design double flare.

Now, many cars have been apart by many folks and pieces lost. When they go
looking for them, sometimes they have evaporated and so there is now a quest for
a part that looks like the old one but has a different internal shape. Friends
give them parts that are similar in appearance but aren't the right ones. I'm
surprised at how many cars I see that there has been a mix and match on these
fittings. It's a simple fix, put on the right ones with the right flares!
