I have had good luck with the PerTronix
and Crane systems. They're both excellent. The initial PerTronix units
had
some design faults and were not reliable,
but, if my current experience is any indicator, modern units are just
fine.

On the PerTronix:
Do make sure the grounding wire is
"free" of any binding or rubbing on 
any metal part within the distributor
at all times per Dave Lieb's post.

We did not check this carefully enough
on our initial installation after not making
sure we had sufficient wire in there to
begin with and good clearance at all
times. Rubbed on a metal part and
burned the unit out. Our fault...not the
fault of the unit! :)

I, too, like the fact the PerTronix is self
contained within the distributor. Otherwise, I would be using the Crane
having had such good experience with
this product for many, many years.
