If you have a lousy ground, a jump won't overcome that if you're hooking the 
cables to the battery.  You still haven't answered if the starter spins or not, 
jump or no hump.

One of the simple ways that's pretty reliable to see if you have a bad ground 
or not, is to turn on the headlights when you attempt to start it.  If they 
just go out, and come back on when the key or starter is released, then look 
for a bad ground.  If they dim, then weak battery or short someplace.  Watch 
out for captive smoke creeping out of cables and wires!
