Get a new tank and, COAT the new tank!
Swilling it out with a little metal conditioner is a good idea to remove
any
contaminant while giving the metal a good
"tooth".
If you wish a plug..weld one in there before you begin. The new tanks
don't
come with a "plug" as far as I know.
If and when you "coat", either "cover"
that little filter "screen" in there (some
way, some how...don't ask me how!) at the bottom of the "pick-up tube"
or remove
the damn thing before you begin,
but whatever you do...don't "coat" it!!
"Coat" and new tank should outlast
you! Don't coat it and you'll be replacing
it in another 10 years or so, even with
reasonable use of "dry gas" from time to
time.
Either way, I wouldn't waste my time
on the old tank, really.
