Vacuum gauges can be very useful. For starters, on a given engine, the
higher the vacuum as you are driving, the better the gas mileage you are
getting, thus its use as a "fuel economy gauge". It can also tell you a lot
of useful information about the health of your engine (assuming it is the
non-buffered variety). Most Chilton manuals have a section on reading vacuum
gauges in the troubleshooting section.
