There are quite a few things that can lock the transmission in 1st gear, but
mostly junk that falls or dislodges from somewhere else.  As you describe the
circumstances, though, and given that you are interested in doing a conversion,
you may have the skills necessary to repair the transmission you have.  I did
one last year, but I sold that car and am now facing another repair.  The Haynes
manual I have provided all the detail I needed to get through the job.  No
special tools needed, but I did make up a dummy shaft to hold the needle
bearings in place when I installed the countershaft.

For less than $200 in parts, I put together a very slick shifting and relatively
quiet transmission.
