In readiness for the safety
inspection in the 65 Sprite, I
tackled the horn electrical
today. The horn would not
work, so I started tracing
wires. Using my old sweep
multi-meter, I found I had
power at the fuse box, and
continuity from the horn to
the column harness. I had
continuity from the harness to
the column centre, but when I
jump wired it, no sound. After
rechecking everything several
times, it finally clicked.
When I checked for power at
the right side of the fuse
box, I had to put the red lead
on the fuse end, and black on
ground. When checking the left
side, I had to reverse the
wires to get a reading. I had
the horn power hooked to the
left side. Once I moved the
wire on the fuse box over to
the right, I jumped from the
centre of the column to the
outer ring, and the horn
sounded.
Thinking I was done, I put the
horn push back into place. On
the test push, no joy, no
sound. After more cogitating,
I tried to determine if there
was no contact behind the
centre push. I put small dabs
of anti-seize on the centre
contact, as well as various
spots around the ring. Install
the push, remove, and I see
that the centre is not
touching the push. Short of
replacing the column, how does
one make the centre assembly
stick out farther? Well, since
I couldn't do that, I super
glued a penny on the back of
the push. Installed, and
viola, sound.

Ok, so perhaps this isn't
concours, but since MOST of us
actually DRIVE our cars, this
may help someone down the road
pass MOT or U.S. inspection.
