Hey Cap'n,
You been in any of the latest cockpits?? Got a tour of a new
340 Airbus the other day with all the latest avionics. Wow!!
That sucker can fly itself!! In the olden days I used to have to
spend an hour or so on the flight plan and then punch the points
into the INS - then we got cumputer flight plans in the 70s so
there was only punching them into the INS manually, take off
and climb out, then turn it over to the plane and take it back
at TOD through landing. After a while they could even do
everything after rotation and up to outer marker....
Nowadays you do nothing. You kick the tires, light the fires,
sit in the seat taxi to run-up and turn the damned thing on.
If there's no sig wx conditions, the damned 340 will take over
from engine run-up, rotate the bird, climb to altitude, auto
radio in to centers, fly a previously downloaded flight plan or
a canned plan, contact destination tower, and on clearance will
actually land the damned plane - EVEN IN ZERO/ZERO!!! All
you have to do is taxi it to the proper terminal gate!
Man these poor kids today have it tough!! ;-)
 Cheers!!
