Let me take a crack at it:

They poured out the water and oil slowly and as oil floats on water,
they
poured out separately.

They dissolved the salt in the mix by adding water

and then passed it through a filter to separate the salt water from the
sand.

sieve made of distincts particules... think coffe making)

 
The fourth thing to do is to evaporate the water to separate it from the
salt.
> state change, evaporation, precipitation?
