I think ammeters are next to useless.  Voltmeters aren't much better.
I have a voltmeter in the Miata but only because I wanted a twin
A-pillar pod and couldn't find anything else to put in there.
A voltmeter will run up to 14 or so and stay there if your charging
system is working properly.  Also, with the key on and engine not
running, a voltmeter can tell you what your battery voltage is.
The ammeter will tell you if you have everything on, but you already
know that.   Plus, to get the ammeter to work properly you have to
route everything through it.
If there is a good reason to have an ammeter, please LMK.
