I think your conclusion is correct.  Has to be.  The way I think, 
though, is that the more switches/relays you have, the more you increase 
the chance of one failing.  I have relays to control my fuel pump and my 
electric fan and those haven't failed yet.  But I've had some relays 
(the cube-shaped ones) fall apart in my hand, so I don't 100% trust 
their integrity.  I ty-wrap them to the socket to prevent them 
physically falling apart, and carry spares.

I once had a kill switch fail.  It wouldn't close, and I missed a race.  
I carry a spare one of those now, too.
