Same points jumped out at me.  On my 68 B (long gone) the Kangol belts 
attached in a similar way and I always wondered about those too.  I'd do 
something with the tail pipes; seem too long and obvious.  Sucker sure 
moves out like a violated gorilla!  What fun!
