It is virtually (notice that I didn't say "completely") impossible for a blown
diode in a rectifier pack to allow AC current into the system- the best that
it could do is pulsating DC and that is really no problem. When the diode blew
your alternator just couldn't pump enough current into the system to charge
the battery or run the car.
