A couple of years ago, in a Pittsburgh suburb, a guy who had a 930 as (at
least the way I read it) as a "see me" car and who was shown to not
understand the vehicle dynamics of a rear-engined Porsche, sold his 930. On
the day before the new owner was to pick the car up, the seller took his
neighbor out for "one last ride" in the car. Accelerating away from a
traffic light and into a twisty section of 2 lane, with minor (at least for
traveling at the speed limit) elevation changes, the guy made the mistake of
lifting his right foot out of the throttle in a left-hand turn, as the road
leveled off after a slight rise. It was the next to last ride for both the
930 owner and his neighbor (if the hearse counts as a ride) as they were
killed on impact with a parked Toyota and the brick wall of a house.
ANY rear-engined Porsche will bite you, big time, if you make the mistake of
going to a trailing throttle setting when the car is at it's limit in a
turn. Those without the experience to know not to lift their right foot are
also the least likely to know how to deal with the resulting instant and
massive oversteer. Obviously, the faster you are going the more sudden and
dramatic the oversteer.
The 930 is a really poor choice of car for the novice. If your friend is
serious about owning this car, he needs to join PCA and attend their DE
(driver education) events, which are held at race courses throughout the
country. PCA recognized the fact that probably 98% of new Porsche owners
have no clue about how to maintain control of their Porsches under high
speed conditions. The 930 is a car that can easily get your friend in over
his head in a heart-beat. I hope he understands just how lethal this car
can be for him, if he fails to learn how to drive it properly. The fact
that he asked you for help in learning how to handle it is certainly
encouraging.

My other friend is Jeff
