BEWARE USA MADE ITEMS!!!
I have two Nissans, made in the USA. Back in my 20's, we had 2 Datsuns and
Martha and I drove them to almost 200K. Now, I have an 05 Altima, and an 05
Pathfinder.
The 2.5 Altimas have a weak catalytic converter, which happens to be part of
the exhaust manifold. It often fails during engine startup, allowing sand
type particulates to drawn into the combustion chamber. This destroys the
engine. Fortunately, ours failed during the 70 mile drive to work my wife
does every day, but it still cost us over $600 to replace the failed cat.
Why replace? Because they won't inspect it with the check engine light on,
and it stays on, once it fails.
The Pathfinder radiator has a weak barrier between the radiator and the
transmission cooling tank. When this fails, AND THEY WILL, it pumps your
transmission full of water. This takes out your clutches. The cost to
replace the radiator and flush the transmission was $800. The thing will
drive, but in overdrive, it slips horribly. The cost to replace the
transmission is $5000.
F'n US Union Labor!!!
If you know anyone that has a 4 cyl Altima, or a Pathfinder, around the 2005
model year, have them get online and search for themselves.
Nissan will NOT send out a TSB, as it could potentially cost them hundreds
of millions to correct this problem.
I would suggest the $600 investment to install an aftermarket cat on the 2.5
Altima. That is way cheaper than another engine.
On the Pathfinder, install an aftermarket transmission cooler, IMMEDIATELY.
Again, WAY WAY cheaper than a transmission. Plug the inlet and outlet on the
radiator afterwords, and when the barrier fails, add water to top it off
again. No sense replacing that, once the external cooler is installed.
BEWARE US MADE PRODUCTS!!
