Did anybody possibly change out the coil and replace it with a coil designed
for an external ballast resistor?

Since all of this the dizzy has been changed out with another dizzy and we
lost spark. "New" dizzy was 180 degrees out so wires were changed. Put the
"old" dizzy back in and wires switched back and still no spark.
