Yup. The bubbles coupled with the extreme heat actually cause a sublimation 
(direct change for solid to gas phase) effect in the steel. Because of the 
austenitic nature of the substrate, there is severe weakening of the metal in 
the area of the friction induced heat, e.g. the hole.
