Hello Weslake1330,
Every state has different rules about "number plates" ... In the U.S. we call
the license plates... They have stickers that expire yearly (in most cases..
I'll get to that). Those are called the tags. When you renew you get a new
registration certificate. This is separate from the title (which proves
ownership). .. Title goes with the car, and the new owner will get a new title
when he registers the vehicle. At that time he will get new plates. ..
Different states, different inspections or none at all. .. mostly none at all
but some do have tests to make sure that they meet pollution requirements...
others don't..
In most states you can pay more to get a plate of your own choosing, as long as
someone else hasn't already claimed the one you want... .. These are called
vanity plates. and usually restricted to 7 characters or fewer. There may be
some that are the same but not from the same state... (I was thinking of
getting one .... LCNSPL8... it's not taken in the state of Washington .. but I
digress..
Also in some if not most states are "collector car plates) .. and "Horseless
carriage" plates... these are one time cost plates. and do not have yearly
tags... .. collector car plates are for cars older than 25 years and there are
restrictions on the use of the car..-- to and from.. and in parades.. and
limited pleasure and test purpose driving--. .. also for cars older than 25
years.. if you can find a plate with tags from the year the car was made, you
can use that, again for a one time fee with limited use restrictions...
When the police pull you over they want to see the registration. which proves
the car is yours and the taxes have been paid for the year, but .. you keep
the title safe at home. ..and that is what gets transferred when you sell the
car or move to another state. .. kinda like the deed to a house... you sign
away the title.
Hope that helps...
