Those blind nuts sound like rivnuts, nutserts, or a variant thereof. I just
bought a nice set, including the pop-rivet-like tool, from McMaster-Carr.
There are zillions of variations, but mostly you get a choice of
aluminum or steel, as well as some that are rubber coated in order
to be weatherproof or have closed ends (one of which is probably what
WST really wants).
