     Torque on a head, with valves, lifters, pushrods, rockers, etc. for
     one bank(do both heads if you're masochistic) with new head gasket and
     modeling clay or '90's-acceptable stuff and hand crank the engine @
     few times.

     Remove carefully & "mike" compressed clay sections. Your engine
     builder/cam grinder should give you the "min". required for safety;
     you should also allow for thermal expansion.I believe the
     CHILTON/MOTORS manuals give these specs. in the "engine building"
     sections.

     All reputable piston & cam mfg's. will show this in their parts
     catalogs or as part of the packing list/assembly instructions that
     come with the parts. Years ago cam mfg's. used to only show cam specs.
     at the cam lobe. You then had to multiply by the "rocker arm ratio" to
     derive total lift at the valve. Again, your engine builder should know
     this. Assembling your engine with either advanced or retarded crank-to-
     cam timing changes SLIGHTLY the above as the valves open/close sooner or
     later in relation to "normal" TDC crank/cam timing.Again, a reputable
     engine builder will discuss this with you.

Well, the measurement of how high the pistons go sounds all fine and
easy. But, how do you check if the valves will clear?
