Cool,
   The rubber vent hose that runs from one tank to the other has a tendency
to crack right at the tube at the top of the tanks.  It is hard to see as it is
on the far side of the tank's sheet metal lip in the dark.  You should replace
 the cross over vent hose with new fuel line.  I think 3/8 is the proper size.
I have had this happen on both Tigers and Alpines. Smell only with full tanks
or hard turns.  Wipe the area with a rag, then stick your finger on the
connection after you do sone sharp turns with full tanks to find the 
problem.  You may have to remove the cardboard side panels for access.
