In the early days of the foreign car business ('49 and on) there was a
distinct practice by American manufacturers to have a NEW model every
year. The NEW model came out in September. No sneak looks. No magazine
previews. They were all covered up on the carriers and the dealership
windows were soaped up until OFFICIAL announcement day. Foreign cars
were not in such a cycle. Small changes occurred thought the year, and
some small cosmetics is September in the home country. Trouble was,
these cars didn't arrive here for another 3 months of slow boat. Not to
be out-done, the foreign car dealer just called any car unsold on his
lot to be the next years model when Detroit released theirs. When the
REAL changed model arrived, it was just a "mid-year production
variation".
