Hi:
I have been watching the coolant posts and have an interesting story
to add. A friend of mine had a razzoo engine built for his MGA to the
tune of $5,000+. He insisted that it be filled with bottled
water/glyc. when it was installed. After driving it for a bit, it
over heated. The installer found that it was full of "gunk". Since I
work at a tech. college I had the gunk analysed as the builder blamed
the people that dunked the block and they blamed him. The chem. guys
found that it was mineral salts that had precipitated out in the
engine. It turned out that the bottled H2O company had deliverd
mineral water instead of distilled. The coolant combined with the
minerals under heat from the engine and became the "gunk" which
caused more heat which caused more . . .
At the time the coolant manuf. said they advised always mixing the
glyc. and H2O out side of the engine, just like you mix oil and gas,
as this was supposed to keep the glyc. from picking up minerals from
the engine which would precipitate out under heat and become the
white "gunk".
I recently checked with several manuf. and they said "Never heard of
such a thing . . . dump it in the engine it'll mix." Guess it depends
if they think they may be held liable for an engine rebuild or not as
to what thier opinion is.
Godspeed
Jc
