Like they say, different strokes. I've removed the engine from my Tiger
twice. At first I attempted to do it according to the shop manual
approach: Jack the front up about 2 feet, remove some stuff and remove
engine and transmission as one, using a jack under the transmission to
dolly it fwd. The problem with this is that the hoist you must use to
lift engine and transmission above the engine compartment must be a
monster. Take a look at the picture in the shop manual. That thing
must have to lift about 10 feet! The compromise approach I used was to
use a modest hoist and, after engine and transmission are vertical in
the engine compartment, unbolt the trans and remove it from below. The
engine can then come out over the top. Crossmember, etc stay intact. I
also found it useful to straddle the car with a 2X4 with a chain
connected to the rear of the engine to support the rear of the engine
while it's coming out. It takes a person per side to support the 2X4.

Good luck. Let us know how you decide to do it. I'm sure there are a
few ways yet that haven't been tried.
