Brock,

Oh, I didn't mean a jewelry appraiser won't explain his criteria for
color, clarity, carat, cut, brilliance to you. I meant he is not going
to teach you how to do all this things yourself as he has learned over
years of experience. You may be using the term "educate" in a looser
sense then I would. And just try emeralds and their artificial value
enchantments, and the detection techniques.

I will tell you about Aqua Regia, however, if you are interested in
gold.

I'll bet a better analogy would be in the art world. Experts will talk
about their authentication techniques, brush stroke, color, pigment,
materials, "artist's technique". They will tell you that some of the
Cistine Chapel was some by students, as well as some parts of Leonardo's

paintings.

They will talk about artificial surface patinas, X-rays,
electron microscope examinations, X-Ray spectroscopy, and the
differences they detect, but not how to create them to equal the
original, or how to create them to fool the experts. That's what they
get the big bucks for, and their certification techniques are secret to
foil counterfeiters (as well as competition).

If there is money involved, and dastards (correct
spelling) around, mischief will certainly be made. I agree that Alpine
sheet metal fenders, wheels wells, other rust prone parts are a
reasonable source for restoration, as long as it's a Tiger one is
restoring. Swapping VIN's and running gear to an Alpine is NOT a
"rebody".

I presume you don't disagree about the Treasury and the nonpublic
markings on currency.

Sorry about the long answer, but I was surprised by your position, and
felt that perhaps you just weren't thinking with the counterfeiters
mind set.

Steve
