I got both tanks in. Both my old tanks were quite pitted on the outside
surfaces, particularly on the fender side of each tank. I had them
dipped and sealed about four years ago but have only put on about 1000
miles- move to Cincinnati and all. Did I ever tell this group how much I
hate installing gas tanks in a Tiger. This is my fourth time- whatever
happened to third times a charm.

The new tanks I now installed are also dipped, sealed and I painted the
outside again twice. If these don't last, tough. I'll use some of the
lists ideas to put in other types of tanks.

While I had the car down I put it up on blocks to check things out for
going to Maryland. Couple things I found.
Of the four bolts holding the drive shaft to the rear end all four were
at least slightly loose, and two were real loose. They didn't have any
lock washers on them when I tore the car apart and I re-installed them
the same way. Are these supposed to have lock washers or lock nuts?
The boots on the upper ball joints are torn already. Again there are
only about 1000 miles on these things although about four years. There
was a message on replacement boots a while ago that I ignored since mine
were so new. Could someone pull that out again and send it to let me
know what boots you can replace these with since the ball joints are
new.
I changed the oil and in the bottom of the oil pan that I drained the
oil into were a few pieces of metal. The largest is around 1/2" long and
maybe 1/4 wide. It was folded over so it was only about 1/16" wide but
it was thin enough metal, almost like aluminum foil or something that I
could easily unfold it. There is black on one side almost like paint,
and it will peal off, while the other side has a golden hue to parts of
it and the rest looks shiny like aluminum or steel. I haven't had a
chance to check anything further to see if it's ferrous or what. Any
ideas on if this could be a bearin gor some other bad thing coming
apart, or I just dropped a piece of gasket tube or something into the
engine when rebuilding it several years ago. This in only the third time
I've changed the oil since rebuild. (Again only 1000 miles).

Still plan to drive to Maryland for the United. I'm just now making sure
I have my towing insurance up to date and carry my portable phone. One
month to go and counting..
