A rather dramatic thump reverberated through the house early on
Christmas Eve. It seemed to have originated in the garage, on it's
roof or somewhere off in that direction, but quick look revealed
nothing amiss. So it was back to the family festivities, the
     disturbance forgotten.

The day after Christmas, we discovered that the thump wasn't an early
visit from Santa. One of the garage door springs had broken. The
released energy took a chunk of concrete off the chimney, bent the
s**t out of the door track support and the spring's eyebolt, and
there's a gouge in the canoe that I don't think has anything to do
with my navigational abilities. The Tiger was on the other side, and
was untouched. Thankfully, no one was in the garage at the time.

That afternoon I replaced the spring, and installed safety cables on
the springs on both doors. Most home centers carry kits of these
steel cables, that thread through the springs, to retain the pieces if
they break. I'd thought about these for years, but it took this to
get me into action. Learn from my mistake. Don't let this happen to
     you.
