Hi Chris
I am in a similar situation with my Tiger .I had to pull the engine ,trans
and wiring harness to get frame rust sandblasted and repaired. It is easy to
get a late model 289-302 to fit in ,stock like. You just need to pay
attention to what you are doing. Most Tigers came with a 5-bolt 260,but the
Mark II's have a late pattern 289 in the engine bay instead.I have a 260 that
I rebuilt in it right now but I have a professionally built 302 -based
stroker that was built out of a Ford Performance solutions(www.f-p-s.com)
stroker kit and a block and 289 hipo heads I purchased from a local Ford swap
meet.Fowler Engines built the 347 short block earlier this year and right now
are finishing up prepping the heads for my project.I still have a lot of odds
and ends to buy to complete my engine.Like you when I have the money
available for a component I buy it,otherwise I save until I can get it or
trade for it.
The Lake wood part is NOT usable on a Tiger.I would not throw away the
lakewood bell, but would trade it for a stock production aluminum bell, and
then have the proper trans mounting holes added to the stock Ford part so
the narrow eared (early) Tiger trans would work. The lakewood part might even
have BOTH patterns to use one as a guide. You would also need to change the
clutch fork, purchase(or trade for) the sheetmetal cover plate that fits the 6
bolt bell and adapt the slave cylinder bracket or make your own.
If none of this makes any sense to you .I can send you a compilation of
e-mails that I have assembled on this subject.I am going out of town
tomorrow,so I may not be able to send it to you immediately.
My wife,Carol and I were in Hawaii in April.Maui was fantastic. And isnt the
USS Tuscon a (688 class) fast attack sub?
