Continuing on Theo's observations,
I am using the LAT clamp-on Traction Masters, and they do the job too,
without any welding or reinforcement of the frame where the weld is
supposed to go. Both are still currently offered as new items at
Traction Masters, with a few improvements over the original design, such
as soft urethane bushings, instead of rubber, and I believe they were
looking into a larger pad for the front weld-on.
